Ladakh is a remote high-altitude region in the northern Indian Himalaya, often called the “Land of High Passes.” Known for its stark desert mountains, ancient monasteries, and deeply rooted Tibetan-Buddhist culture, Ladakh sits between the Himalayas and the Karakoram, creating a dramatic landscape of rugged peaks, deep valleys, and wide open skies. Ladakh offers the perfect mix of cultural immersion and high-altitude adventure, where every step toward the summit passes through landscapes that feel both ancient and wild.
Kang Yatse I is the bigger, bolder twin — a dramatic pyramid of rock, ice and snow rising to 6,400m (20,997 ft) at the head of Ladakh’s Markha Valley. While KY2 is a popular trekking summit, KY1 is a true mountaineering objective: steeper, more technical, far less frequented.
After acclimatizing in Leh (3,500m), we trek six days through the Markha Valley — a high-altitude desert of mud-brick villages, monasteries and prayer flags — until Kang Yatse reveals itself: a perfect snow pyramid above the valley. From Base Camp (~5,050m), we establish a Summit Camp on the glacier at ~5,940m. The summit push begins around midnight, roped up across crevasses and steep snow slopes pitching to 40–50°. Crampons, ice axe and fixed ropes essential. Reaching the summit at sunrise opens a 360° panorama of the Stok Kangri range, Zanskar peaks, and the distant Karakoram.
Serious but not extreme — the perfect graduation peak from trekking summits to true Himalayan mountaineering.
